Mbale Regional Referral Hospital in Uganda has once again secured the top spot in the country’s annual health sector performance report, reaffirming its reputation as a leading healthcare institution. In the financial year 2022/23, Mbale Referral Hospital achieved an impressive Diagnostic Related Group (DRG) score, significantly surpassing its peers.

The Top Performer

For the second consecutive year, Mbale Regional Referral Hospital stands tall as the best referral hospital in Uganda, as confirmed by the annual health sector performance report for the financial year 2022/23. This achievement is a testament to the hospital’s dedication to providing exceptional healthcare services to its community.

A Remarkable Score

In the 2022/23 report, Mbale Referral Hospital earned a remarkable DRG score of 120,418, setting a high bar for other hospitals to reach. Patient Care and Numbers

The hospital’s commitment to patient care is evident in its statistics. In the year 2022/23, Mbale Referral Hospital admitted a total of 61,759 patients, with an additional 81,479 outpatients seeking medical attention. Such impressive numbers reflect the hospital’s role as a crucial healthcare provider for the region.

Competitive Rivals

St. Mary’s Lacor secured the third position in the rankings, while Masaka, Arua, and Lira followed as the fourth, fifth, and sixth-best hospitals, respectively. Unfortunately, Tumble, Entebbe, and Soroti Referral Hospitals struggled and found themselves at the lower end of the performance spectrum.

Understanding the Success

A key factor contributing to Mbale’s success is its extensive catchment population, which serves regions encompassing Bugisu, Sebei, and Bukedi. This broad service area allows the hospital to cater to a diverse range of medical needs and to offer healthcare services to a significant number of people.

Challenges of High DRGs

It is important to note that while high DRG scores signify success, they can also pose challenges. Hospitals with high DRGs often face congestion issues, which can negatively impact the quality of healthcare services delivered to patients. Balancing efficiency and quality remains a key consideration for the hospital’s management.

Consistent Excellence

Mbale Regional Referral Hospital’s achievement in ranking as the best referral hospital in the 2022/23 report builds upon its success in the previous year’s assessment. This consistent excellence underscores the hospital’s commitment to maintaining high standards of healthcare delivery.

The annual health sector performance report for the financial year 2022/23 was unveiled on November 1st, 2023, during the 29th Health Sector Joint Review Mission held at Speke Resort Munyonyo.
