The host of NBS TV’s Youth Voice program, MC Ollo, has expressed worries regarding the increasing prevalence of same-sex relationships among students. Ollo, who has engaged with numerous adolescents through his program, mentioned that a significant crisis is unfolding within these educational institutions, and many responsible parties are choosing to remain silent about it.
He noted that this phenomenon is particularly common among girls in prestigious secondary schools, excluding S.1, as they are forming intimate connections with each other. The TV host indicated that school administrations might either be ignorant of the situation or are simply opting to ignore it.
Some schools do expel students caught engaging in such behavior. However, because these students come from wealthy and influential families, they often relocate to other schools or international institutions. Regarding parents, it seems that either they are aware of their children’s activities yet indifferent, or they are completely unaware. Ollo then questioned what actions should be taken in response to this pressing issue.
“There’s a silent crisis in schools, the rise of girl-girl in relationships and the alarming Indifference
This is across top schools, girls in S2, S3, S4, S5, S6 are engaging in relationships with fellow girls, yet no one seems to mind, and even the schools are keeping quiet. Some Schools expel them, only for them to transfer elsewhere, international schools or some even return because there parents are rich and powerful, well some parents appear either unconcerned or unaware.
If this doesn’t disturb you, then you should be worried.
What can be done to eradicate this vice?”
Undoubtedly, the concerns raised by the TV host reflect a legitimate issue that many individuals have noticed and vocalized for some time. For many years, this has been a significant problem in Ugandan schools, particularly in single-sex institutions.
Previously, this behavior was predominantly observed among boys in same-sex schools, but various initiatives and awareness campaigns have been implemented to address it, leading to a noticeable decline.
Rumors about similar occurrences among girls have been circulating for quite some time, yet it seems to receive less attention because it involves girls. There have also been discussions about merging single-sex schools to include all genders, but this proposal faced strong opposition, especially from religiously affiliated schools.
