The National Identification Registration Authority (NIRA) has revealed plans to issue National Identification Numbers (NINs) to approximately 18 million Ugandans in an upcoming exercise scheduled to commence in June of this year. NIRA’s executive director, Rosemary Kisembo, announced the initiative during a press briefing at the Police headquarters in Naguru, Kampala.
Kisembo highlighted that the upcoming exercise will also include the renewal of identification documents for 27 million citizens who obtained their IDs a decade ago during the initial launch of the registration process. She emphasized that every Ugandan aged 16 and above is entitled to possess a NIN, a national ID, and registration in the national register.
Prior to this announcement, only 27 million Ugandans had acquired national IDs out of an estimated national population of 45 million citizens, according to Kisembo. The forthcoming exercise is set to be conducted across 10,717 parishes over a span of 10 months, covering the entirety of the country.
Further details regarding the exercise, as well as insights into the logistics and implementation of this extensive national identification initiative will be published shortly.
