Soroti, Uganda – As the National Resistance Movement (NRM) prepares for its internal elections, delegates across Eastern Uganda are being called upon to rally behind Captain Mike Mukula, the incumbent NRM Vice Chairperson for the Eastern Region, rather than electing his challenger, Calvin Echodu.

Supporters argue that Mukula’s proven leadership, development record, and political experience make him the best choice to steer the region forward.

A Track Record of Development

Captain Mukula, a seasoned politician and businessman, has been instrumental in advocating for infrastructure projects, healthcare improvements, and youth empowerment programs across Eastern Uganda.

His tenure has seen increased government attention to the region, including road construction, hospital upgrades, and agricultural support initiatives.

“Mukula understands our needs and has delivered on his promises. From lobbying for better roads to supporting education and health, his impact is visible,” said Sarah Amongin, an NRM delegate from Soroti.

Strong Party Loyalty and Experience

A long-serving member of the NRM, Mukula has built strong connections within the party and government, enabling him to effectively lobby for the region’s interests. His experience as a former State Minister for Health and his current role as NRM Vice Chairperson give him an edge in mobilizing resources and political support for Eastern Uganda.

“In these critical times, we need a leader who knows how to navigate the system. Mukula has the networks and the trust of the President,” remarked Patrick Okumu, an NRM mobilizer in Mbale.

Why Not Echodu?

While Calvin Echodu, a former MP for Ngora County, presents himself as a fresh alternative, critics argue that he lacks Mukula’s influence and track record. Echodu’s brief stint in Parliament and limited grassroots engagement compared to Mukula’s decades-long service raise concerns about his ability to effectively represent the region at the highest levels.

“We appreciate Echodu’s ambition, but the Eastern Region needs a tested leader who can secure our interests in the NRM,” said Moses Otekat, a youth leader in Kumi.

Delegates’ Call for Continuity

With the NRM emphasizing stability and development, many delegates believe retaining Mukula ensures continuity in ongoing projects and sustained advocacy for the region. His supporters are mobilizing across Teso, Bugisu, and Sebei sub-regions, urging voters to prioritize experience over change.

As the election date approaches, the message from Mukula’s camp is clear: “Let’s stay the course. Captain Mike Mukula has delivered, and we must allow him to finish what he started.”

The final decision now rests with the NRM delegates—will they choose continuity with a proven leader or take a chance on a new face? For now, the momentum seems to favor the captain.
