The National Unity Platform (NUP), representing the political arm of the People Power movement in Uganda, has reported on recent activities organized by its Ottawa-based chapter in Canada. Over the weekend, members of the Ottawa chapter organized demonstrations to raise awareness about ongoing human rights abuses in Uganda, particularly highlighting the issue of unlawful detention of political prisoners under President Museveni’s regime.

The demonstrations aimed to draw attention to the plight of political prisoners and to call for their immediate release. Additionally, the Ottawa chapter urged international donors to reconsider their support for the Ugandan regime, emphasizing the need to cease funding that directly contributes to the oppression and human rights violations perpetrated by the government.

According to one of the participants, by organizing these demonstrations, the Ottawa chapter of NUP sought to amplify the voices of those affected by the oppressive actions of the Ugandan government and to advocate for justice and accountability. She added that their efforts reflect a commitment to upholding human rights principles and promoting democracy and freedom in Uganda.

Back home, NUP Uganda expressed gratitude to its Ottawa-based chapter for their dedication and efforts in organizing these demonstrations. A statement on the party’s X account said their solidarity and advocacy contribute to the global movement against human rights abuses and authoritarianism, demonstrating the power of collective action in effecting positive change.

The opposition party added that it remains committed in its campaign to defend human rights, promoting democracy, and advocating for the welfare of all Ugandan citizens.

The statement further claimed the support and solidarity of its chapters around the world serve as a testament to the shared values and aspirations of the global community in the fight for justice and freedom as NUP continues its work both within Uganda and on the international stage.
