Two prominent members of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Tonny Ssempijja and Alice Nanungi, have been arrested by the police in Masaka. They face charges related to forgery.
The arrests took place around 3 pm on Wednesday at the Masaka City Council Mayors Chambers. Ssempijja and Nanungi were apprehended after attending a council meeting presided over by City Speaker Achilles Mawanda.
According to Twaha Kasirye, the Regional Police Spokesperson, the alleged forgery occurred last year. The case revolves around council minutes indicating Nanungi’s appointment to head the City works committee.
Following their arrest, Nanungi and Ssempijja were taken to Masaka Chief Magistrate’s Court. There, they appeared before Masaka Grade One Magistrate Dan Bwambale.
Magistrate Bwambale granted the suspects bail, allowing them to be released upon payment of a cash bail of sh200,000 and a non-cash bail of sh3m. The state did not oppose the bail application.
Nanungi, who represents the division in Masaka City Council, expressed her belief that the case is politically motivated. She alleges that it is an attempt to thwart her political career.
The situation highlights the tension and complexity surrounding politics in Masaka, with allegations of political interference in legal matters. As the case progresses, it will be important to ensure transparency and fairness in the judicial process.
