Army Bids Goodbye to Col (Rtd) Lauben Mugenyi

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces, has paid a tribute to the late Colonel (Rtd) Lauben Mugenyi, recognizing his dedication to Uganda, the National Resistance Army, and the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF). Col Mugenyi’s distinguished career saw him serve in numerous command and staff roles, contributing significantly to the nation’s security and peace.

“The loss of Col (Rtd) Mugenyi is deeply felt by the UPDF. His role in restoring peace and security was instrumental, and his professional expertise will be greatly missed,” stated General Kainerugaba in a eulogy delivered by Major General Silver Kayemba at the funeral service held at St. Luke Church in Ntinda.




Colonel Lauben Mugenyi passed away on July 2, 2024. His military journey began on May 15, 1985, and he continued to serve with distinction until his retirement on April 28, 2024. Throughout his career, he held various positions both within Uganda and internationally.




Mrs. Edith Buturo, Undersecretary of Finance and Administration at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA), also paid tribute to Col Mugenyi. She highlighted his outstanding contributions to the country during his tenure and praised his commitment to service.




“Col Mugenyi’s service to our nation has been exemplary. His dedication and hard work have left a lasting impact,” Mrs. Buturo stated.

A close friend and colleague, Colonel Kenneth Muhaire, described Col Mugenyi as a loving family man and a diligent officer. “He was not only a remarkable soldier but also a wonderful friend and family man. His legacy will continue to inspire us,” Col Muhaire remarked.

The children of the late Colonel expressed their deep gratitude to the UPDF and their father’s former colleagues for their support during this difficult time. They remembered their father as a humble and kind-hearted man who always wished the best for others.




The funeral service saw the attendance of generals, senior officials from MODVA, and both senior and junior officers, reflecting the widespread respect and admiration for Col Mugenyi.
