Dignitaries Pay Respects at Funeral of Ofwono Opondo’s Mother

The passing of Alice Owenjuye Opondo, mother of Ofwono Opondo, Executive Director of Uganda Media Centre, has drawn condolences from several prominent figures.

Alice Owenjuye, aged 85, breathed her last at Mukono General Hospital on Monday, prompting expressions of grief and remembrance from acquaintances and dignitaries alike.




Among those present at the funeral service, held in Ntinda earlier on Wednesday, were notable figures including Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, Minister of Information Communication and Technology (ICT) Chris Baryomunsi, and other ministry officials.




Addressing the gathering at St. Luke Church Ntinda, Speaker Among lauded Alice Owenjuye for her influential role in the lives of many individuals, emphasizing her significant contribution to nurturing and guiding her children, particularly Ofwono Opondo.




Speaker Among also praised Ofwono for his steadfast defense of the government, even in the face of criticism.

Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa echoed similar sentiments, acknowledging Opondo’s dedication to serving the public with purpose and intentionality.

Amidst the tributes, Speaker Among emphasized the importance of respecting and caring for elderly relatives, advocating for a compassionate approach to familial relationships.




Furthermore, Among defended Fox Odoi, Member of Parliament for West Budama North East constituency, for his stance on the anti-homosexuality bill, highlighting the importance of open debate within political parties.

In his tribute, Ofwono described his mother as the cornerstone of their family, recalling her strength and influence in shaping his career.

During the funeral service, Reverend Anthony Kamukama reflected on the value of time and friendship, underscoring the significance of meaningful connections in life.




The burial ceremony for Alice Owenjuye Opondo is scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 11th, at the family home in Mulanda, Tororo, marking the final farewell to a beloved matriarch.
