Kampala, Uganda – Kawempe North Member of Parliament and National Unity Platform (NUP) stalwart, Muhammad Ssegirinya, has passed away.
Popularly known as “Mr. Update,” Ssegirinya breathed his last on Thursday morning after battling illness for nearly two years. Born in Butale, Kadugala, Masaka District, he rose from humble beginnings to become a powerful voice for the marginalized.
Ssegirinya was known for his spirited and unconventional approach to politics, focusing heavily on grassroots issues such as poverty alleviation, healthcare, and education. His journey from local councillor to representing Kawempe North in the Ugandan Parliament was marked by his relentless efforts to serve his community.
During his tenure, Ssegirinya often made headlines for his innovative methods of aiding his constituents. Notably, he established a makeshift hospital during the peak of the COVID-19 crisis, demonstrating his commitment to public welfare beyond the traditional roles of a parliamentarian. These acts of kindness were not merely charitable; they were powerful statements of policy-making by example, aiming to fill gaps where he believed government support was lacking.
