The day began like any other for lawyer Raphael Okiot and his wife, Faith Irene Kwagala, a Grade One Magistrate in Kyenjojo District. They woke up in high spirits after enjoying a pleasant dinner at their home in Seeta, Mukono District, the evening before.
Raphael Okiot, an advocate in private practice and a lecturer at Uganda Christian University (UCU), had a court appearance scheduled in Entebbe, approximately 50 kilometers away. Despite the distance, Okiot was determined to fulfill his professional obligations.
According to his wife, both of them set their alarms for 6 am to ensure Okiot could leave on time. He declined breakfast, eager to head to court. Little did they know that this would be their last conversation.
Tragedy struck shortly after Okiot left home. Witnesses and CCTV footage revealed a horrifying accident involving a concrete mixer truck whose brakes had failed. The truck veered off course, toppling onto the road divider and crushing Okiot’s car, which he and his wife had purchased just four days earlier.
The scene of the accident was one of chaos and despair. Despite efforts by bystanders, the sheer weight of the cement mixer made rescue impossible without heavy machinery. It was a devastating end to a life filled with promise.
As news of Okiot’s untimely demise spread, tributes poured in from family, friends, colleagues, and students. He was remembered as a generous, brilliant, and loving individual who had touched many lives.
Tonny Tumukunde, a close friend and colleague, praised Okiot’s work ethic and dedication to his family. Mike Muhereza, an associate at the law firm where Okiot worked, highlighted his exceptional legal prowess and teaching abilities.
Barbra Namata, one of Okiot’s students at UCU, fondly recalled his encouragement and support in academic matters. His sudden passing left a void that many found difficult to comprehend.
Reflecting on their life together, Faith Kwagala described Okiot as a loving husband and devoted father. Despite the tragedy, she cherished the memories they had created over 12 years of marriage.
Okiot’s legacy extended beyond his family and friends. His academic achievements and contributions to the legal profession earned him respect and admiration from peers and students alike.
As investigations into the accident continued, questions were raised about road safety and infrastructure. Concerns were voiced about the lack of signage and speed control measures at accident-prone areas.
In the wake of Okiot’s passing, there was a collective call for improved emergency response services and road safety measures. His death served as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the need for greater vigilance on the roads.
As the community mourned the loss of a beloved lawyer and educator, tributes continued to pour in, honoring Okiot’s memory and the impact he had on those around him.
