On Wednesday, the Seventh-Day Adventist Church and the Greater Bushenyi community came together at Katanoga, Kigarama sub-county, Sheema District, for the funeral of Dr. Samuel Iranezeza Biraro. Dr. Biraro, the second Adventist medical doctor in Uganda, served as the medical director at Ishaka Adventist Hospital and passed away last Saturday at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital after battling respiratory failure.
During the ceremony, mourners, including the head of the SDA Church in Uganda, Dr. Moses Maka Ndimukika, reminisced about Dr. Biraro as a dedicated medic and a pillar in the SDA Church. Dr. Maka described him as one of the smartest individuals, noting his service as the pioneer African medical director at Ishaka and the Uganda Union. Dr. Biraro’s contribution to the church and his impactful role in mentoring medical practitioners were highlighted.
Former Health Minister, Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye, praised Dr. Biraro’s support for community and church projects, citing his provision of land for the construction of a church building in Kabwohe. This act was acknowledged as a significant contribution to the church community.
Ms. Lydia Komugisha, the Executive Director of Ishaka Adventist Hospital, commended Dr. Biraro’s transformative leadership and service, noting that his contributions elevated the hospital to a higher level.
The late Dr. Biraro’s children, led by Dr. Samuel Biraro Jr., shared heartfelt memories of their father, describing him as a disciplinarian, loving parent, counselor, and a source of wisdom. They acknowledged his determination, sense of humor, and his ability to balance various roles.
Dr. Samuel Iranezeza Biraro, survived by his widow, Ms. Marion Biraro, four children, and six grandchildren, left a lasting legacy in the medical field and the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
