Ugandan Political Figure Tamale Mirundi Passes Away

Former presidential press secretary Joseph Tamale Mirundi has died at Kisubi Hospital on Entebbe Road due to lung-related complications. He was believed to be in his 60s. Mirundi’s death has elicited a flood of tributes from various quarters, reflecting on his complex role in Ugandan society.

Mirundi, known for his outspoken and often controversial views, was a significant figure in Uganda’s political discourse. He was noted for his charismatic presence and was a vocal commentator on socio-political matters. His impact, according to analysts, is expected to resonate for years to come.

Born in Matale village, Rakai district, as the ninth child to Molly and the late Tamale Mirundi, he rose to prominence in Ugandan politics and media. At the time of his death, Mirundi was serving as the spokesperson for the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) in the Buganda region.

In a past media interview, Mirundi described himself as a self-made man who had overcome significant challenges. He recalled his early life, saying, “I am a man who can quarrel and fight. I am also a self-made man who fought my way from absolute poverty into the privileged class. I am very unique; I started talking at six months, and my father wanted to throw me away, but my mother refused.”

The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, expressed her sorrow on X (formerly Twitter). She remembered Mirundi for his contributions as a journalist, civil servant, and socio-political commentator. “His loss leaves a great void,” she wrote, extending her condolences to his family and friends.

Balaam Barugahara, the state minister for children and youth affairs and vice-chairperson of the PLU for the western region, honored Mirundi’s boldness and memorable presence. “Mzee Tamale’s legacy will live on in our hearts,” Barugahara stated, noting the impact Mirundi had on their media shows.

Kalungu West MP Joseph Ssewungu also took to X to express his grief. He described Mirundi as a courageous and uncensored friend whose departure leaves a lasting impression. “Auf wiedersehen Tamale Mirundi,” he concluded.

Microfinance state minister Haruna Kasolo also mourned Mirundi, acknowledging the profound impact of his voice and guidance on the media landscape. “May his legacy continue to inspire, and may his family find comfort in the impact he made during his lifetime. Rest in peace,” Kasolo wrote on X.

Artiste Eddy Kenzo joined the outpouring of tributes, expressing sadness over Mirundi’s passing.
