A number of Obongi district residents are planning a demonstration, with the intention of traveling to Naguru in Kampala to report alleged misconduct within the CID department in Obongi. They are specifically concerned about the handling of corruption suspects linked to the alleged embezzlement of funds designated for a fish pond project.
These Obongi residents are organizing the demonstration to petition IGP Martin Okoth Ochola, urging him to either send police detectives from the Naguru police headquarters for an independent investigation or to appear personally in Obongi district to witness the conduct of CID officers who are accused of corrupt practices in a conspiracy to defraud the government.
Members of the Yakinemiji Ghost Fish Pond Project have once again resolved to protest against the Obongi police for their failure to investigate corruption allegations involving three Gulu University staff. These staff members are accused of swindling the project of over 37 million shillings and failing to complete the fish pond project. The funds in question were provided to Gulu University in February of this year, and the suspects allegedly embezzled the money.
Angry residents have expressed their intention to protest against police officers who had initially arrested the three suspects on the orders of the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Obongi, Mr. Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka. However, the CID reportedly released the suspects without taking any action against them. The residents now seek to bring this issue to the attention of the IGP so that appropriate actions are taken against these officers.
The residents have accused the CID department in Obongi of being compromised and failing the people of Obongi in their fight against corruption. They are urging the Inspector General of Police, IGP Ochola Martin, to intervene and remove all CIDs in Obongi district, including Ag OC CID Adrani Christopher, whom they accuse of negligence and corruption.
Our news team attempted to contact Adrani, but his known phone number was unavailable at the time of this report to seek his comments on the matter.
During a meeting with the aggrieved members of the fish pond project on Sunday afternoon, RDC Obongi, Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, expressed his sympathy and gratitude to them for their vigilance. He promised that appropriate actions would be taken and that any compromised individuals would be thoroughly investigated. Hashaka called for calm and requested that the residents refrain from going on strike or holding demonstrations, as his office would liaise with relevant police authorities in Kampala to find a satisfactory solution to address their grievances.
