The Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Parliament, Mr. Joel Ssenyonyi, visited Kawempe North legislator Muhammad Ssegirinya at the Agha-Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, where he has been hospitalized for almost two months. Mr. Ssenyonyi dismissed social media reports suggesting Ssegirinya’s health deterioration, stating that the opposition is closely monitoring and will provide a comprehensive report to Parliament.
Accompanied by the opposition chief whip, Mr. John Baptist Nambeshe, Mr. Ssenyonyi praised Ssegirinya’s family, especially his mother, Ms. Justine Nakajumba, for their unwavering support. He assured the public that Ssegirinya is on the path to recovery, emphasizing the role of prayer in the legislator’s healing process.
Addressing concerns about medical facilities in Uganda, Mr. Nambeshe called for increased investment in healthcare to enhance working conditions for the nation’s skilled healthcare workforce. He highlighted the dedication of Ugandan doctors attending to Ssegirinya in Kenya, underscoring the need for better facilities back home.
Ms. Nakajumba urged the public, particularly social media users, to refrain from spreading false death rumors, emphasizing that Ssegirinya will return to his constituency duties. She expressed gratitude to Parliament for its support.
Ssegirinya, who spent over a year in Luzira prison on allegations related to machete killings in greater Masaka, had sought medical treatment in Germany and the Netherlands before being flown to Kenya. His health has been a concern since his release, with earlier reports indicating lung problems and skin-related infections.
