During the 47th commemoration of Saint Janani Luwum Day, Minister of Internal Affairs Major General Kahinda Otafiire cautioned Ugandans against electing leaders who may lead the nation astray, urging them to vote wisely in the upcoming 2026 general election to avoid repeating past mistakes.
Addressing attendees at Wii Gweng in Mucwini, Kitgum district, Otafiire emphasized the importance of exercising the right to vote diligently and cautiously. He warned against electing leaders who engage in divisive behaviors and fail to prioritize national progress, urging citizens to carefully consider the competence and character of candidates before casting their ballots.
Otafiire’s remarks, broadcast live on various television stations, cautioned against being swayed by charisma or appearance, stressing the need to focus on a leader’s capacity to contribute positively to the nation. He specifically cautioned against electing leaders akin to Idi Amin, reminding the electorate of the consequences of choosing leaders solely based on excitement.
Highlighting the significance of learning from past mistakes, Otafiire urged Ugandans to exercise their right to freedom of expression and association without fear of reprisal. He criticized opposition leaders for resorting to rioting instead of utilizing legitimate channels for expressing dissent.
Archbishop Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu echoed Otafiire’s sentiments, appealing to the Ministry of Education to revive Canon Lawrence Primary Teachers College, a renowned institution in Northern Uganda that has produced notable figures like the late Archbishop Janani Luwum and seasoned politician Olara Otunu.
