Equity Bank Uganda has officially welcomed the fourth cohort of the Equity Leaders Program (ELP)—a flagship initiative dedicated to shaping the continent’s next generation of leaders. The 100 scholars, carefully selected from each district with an Equity branch, were introduced to a journey of leadership, personal growth, and impact that promises to transform their lives and communities.

The week-long induction began with a powerful call to purpose, as Elizabeth Wahito, Acting Head of Public Sector and Social Investments, launched ELP 2025 by inviting scholars to introduce themselves. The moment set the tone for what will be a season of learning, mentorship, and transformation.

Following induction, scholars will begin a paid internship within Equity Bank, gaining invaluable hands-on experience under the guidance of EBUL staff. Over the next three months, they will also benefit from personalized college counseling to support their applications to top global universities.

In his keynote address, Equity Bank Managing Director, Gift Shoko, inspired scholars with a compelling metaphor—the eagle—highlighting qualities like resilience, vision, and independence. He emphasized: “Leaders are not made through easy paths. They must rise like eagles.” He also shared two timeless life lessons: “There is no free lunch,” and “If it is to be, it is up to me.”

Wahito further outlined the pillars of Equity’s Social Impact Engine, which include:

  • Energy & Climate: Promoting solar power and clean energy
  • Health: Expanding access to quality care
  • Education & Leadership: Investing in youth potential
  • Food & Agriculture: Advancing food security
  • Enterprise Development: Empowering entrepreneurs
  • Social Protection: Uplifting vulnerable communities

During the induction, Derrick Mugerwa, Manager of Human Resource Learning, guided scholars through the bank’s impressive evolution—from a humble rural building society to a pan-African movement for socio-economic transformation.

Mugerwa also introduced LABICCA, Equity’s internal culture philosophy: Listen, Act, Celebrate, Achieve. These principles empower every team member—and now, every ELP scholar—to be a light of impact and positive change.

As these scholars begin their Equity journey, they do so with bold aspirations—to lead, to innovate, and to transform. Equity Bank remains committed to nurturing leaders not just for the bank, but for Uganda, Africa, and the world.

Equity Bank – Growing Leaders. Transforming Nations.
