Obongi, Uganda – Three suspects were arrested on Thursday evening at Ewafa trading center during a PDM meeting organized by the Office of the RDC Obongi.

This followed numerous complaints from the wanainchi that some individuals were charging between 150,000 – 200,000 UGX as a basic fee for inclusion in the PDM automatic beneficiary list.

Those arrested are Moyin John Bosco, the Chairperson of the Ewafa PDM SACCO, Isile Swaib, and Barack Nickson, the Secretary of the SACCO.

The order for the arrests was issued by the RDC Obongi, Mr. Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, and the ARDC, Umuhoza Habiba Furaha, after receiving complaints from PDM beneficiaries who presented evidence of extortion by the embattled SACCO leaders.

The beneficiaries complained that the SACCO leaders extorted up to over two hundred thousand shillings from them to receive benefits or be placed on the list of beneficiaries.

An over 70-year-old lady named Mariam Nasur, in tears, told the RDC that the so-called SACCO leaders took 150,000/= from her but never provided her with any PDM money.

The Obongi RDC warned all those involved in PDM extortion that they would be dealt with accordingly as they are “playing with fire.” More arrests are still expected as reports of extortion continue to emerge from whistleblowers within Obongi District.
