Kitgum District, in East Acholi, Northern Uganda, will host the 61st Independence Day celebrations this year, with President Yoweri Museveni Kaguta as the guest of honor. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Sustaining a united and progressive nation: Taking charge of our future as a free nation.”
In the Lango sub-region, North Kyoga police are more than ready to secure a peaceful independence celebration. In a press statement issued on Friday, North Kyoga Region Police Public Relations Officer Jimmy Patrick Okema urged members of the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
Okema noted that criminals often take advantage of increased mobility and other activities during the Independence Day celebrations to engage in criminal activities such as robbery, housebreaking and theft, defilement, phone snatching, rape, shop breaking, circulation of fake currencies, motorcycle theft, domestic violence, and accident cases. He also warned of the threat of terrorism, which is still real.
Okema assured the community that the police are prepared to secure a peaceful Independence Day celebration before, during, and after the event. He said that the police have strengthened their covert and overt capabilities through motorized and foot patrol, joint intelligence operations, and CCTV cameras that are active 24/7 to monitor all corners of Lira-City, highways, and other urban centers.
Okema urged members of the public to report any suspicious activity immediately and to practice neighborhood watch. He wished everyone a peaceful Independence Day celebration with peace, love, and unity.
Uganda gained her independence in the year 1962.
