Residents of Kihunda village in Sheema District were devastated on Monday afternoon upon receiving news of the sudden and tragic passing of 17-year-old Abella Amutusimire in a road accident. Just weeks prior, Amutusimire had celebrated her success in the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) 2023 exams, unaware that her life would be cut short.
Amutusimire, who resided with her father, Rev. Erisam Bishanga, in Kyamuhunga, where he served as a priest at Kyamuhunga COU under the West Ankole Diocese, met her untimely demise while returning from seeking admission to S.5 at Kibingo Girls School.
Having attended Kibingo Girls School in Sheema Municipality from S.1 to S.4, Amutusimire had recently received her S.4 exam results, achieving an impressive 32 aggregate score and Division 1. She had been admitted to S.5 and offered a combination of Geography, Entrepreneurship, and Agriculture to study. However, tragically, she would not live to pursue her aspirations.
The administration of Kibingo Girls School, equally stunned by the news, could only confirm the young girl’s passing, with funeral arrangements yet to be finalized at the time of reporting.
According to SP Martial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi region police spokesperson, the fatal incident occurred at Kitwe trading centre in Rwentuha Town Council when a Sino truck collided with the bodaboda (motorcycle taxi) Amutusimire was riding on, causing her to fall off and sustain fatal injuries.
The rider of the bodaboda, identified as Clinton Niwetwesiga, 24, and also the brother of the deceased, was rushed to Kitwe Clinic for medical attention. The police swiftly responded to the scene, led by Sgt Kenneth Mutange, conducting preliminary investigations and taking the necessary steps to gather evidence.
The body of Abella Amutusimire was transported to KIU Teaching Hospital for a postmortem examination, while the driver of the truck was placed under police custody pending further investigation into the tragic incident.
