(Mbarara) – Three people have been confirmed dead and several others injured in a multi-vehicle crash on the Mbarara-Bushenyi road on Monday morning. The accident took place around 7:35 a.m. at Mile 9, involving three vehicles and resulting in fatalities and multiple injuries.
According to Michael Kananura, the Community Liaison Officer and Public Relations Officer in the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, the accident involved a Toyota Hiace (UBK 951Q), a Toyota Mark II (UAX 318V), and a Toyota Wish (UAZ 899J). Kananura detailed that the initial collision occurred when the driver of the Mark II, who was traveling from Bushenyi toward Mbarara, lost control of the vehicle while attempting to avoid a pothole in the road.
The out of control Toyota Mark II collided with an oncoming Toyota Wish, leading to the deaths of two individuals inside the Mark II—the driver and a passenger—while injuring seven people in the Toyota Wish.
In a subsequent incident, a speeding Toyota Hiace from the Bushenyi direction struck one of the crash victims as they were being removed from the scene. The Hiace driver did not stop but was later intercepted by police at a checkpoint in Mbarara.
“The victims were rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, and the bodies were conveyed to the mortuary for postmortem,” Kananura stated.
The involved vehicles were towed to Kashaka Police Station for further inspection, and authorities have begun investigating the incident. Kananura attributed the accident to excessive speeding by all three vehicles and pointed out that the pothole at Mile 9 may have contributed to the initial loss of control.
Kananura called on road authorities to address the pothole issue urgently, emphasizing the importance of observing speed limits and driving carefully, especially when approaching accident scenes.
