Nawanyago Health Centre III in Kamuli District, Uganda, has been equipped with a new state-of-the-art theatre and laboratory valued at Shs1.2 billion in a significant development for rural healthcare. The St Thomas Theater and Laboratory, funded by Mr. Thomas Meumann, were inaugurated as part of the health facility’s golden jubilee celebrations.
The initiative took shape after Florian Kistler, a young volunteer from the International Culture Youth Exchange Programme in Berlin, Germany, spent a vacation in the area and felt inspired to express gratitude for the impact on his medical career. Mr. Meumann embraced the idea, providing the necessary funding for the project.
Ms. Rebecca Kadaga, the First Deputy Prime Minister and Kamuli District Woman Member of Parliament, emphasized the importance of appreciating and sustaining such contributions. She commended the commitment of individuals like Florian Kistler and Mr. Meumann, highlighting the need to ensure that newly established facilities do not go underutilized or lack maintenance.
German Ambassador Mr. Mathias Schauer expressed his country’s commitment to being a willing partner in health and education. He emphasized the importance of strengthening relations between Germany and Uganda in these crucial sectors.
Fr Thomas Bamutaze, the Nawanyago Catholic Parish Priest, urged stakeholders to continue supporting the health centre’s mission, emphasizing its role as a place of healing, comfort, and hope for future generations.
Rev Sr Mary Angela Njeri, the health in-charge, celebrated the milestone, stating that at 50 years old, the facility has received the best gift, enabling the community to anticipate improved, quality, and accessible healthcare.
Kerstin Weber Kistler, President of Tusiima Nawanyago Germany, highlighted her son’s pursuit of a medical career dream in Nawanyago and pledged to continue lobbying, mobilizing, and influencing funding for similar projects. The completed Vision 2025 facility now houses a German-standard operating theatre, an intensive care unit, and an extensive laboratory, setting a benchmark for healthcare standards in Kamuli district.
The association, Tusiima Nawanyago Germany, sponsors 64 learners annually, emphasizing the need for a growing, stronger, wider, and deeper partnership for impactful contributions to healthcare.
