Leaders in Kikuube district have strongly condemned the recent theft of a battery from road equipment provided to the district by the Ministry of Works. The missing battery, belonging to a wheel loader, was discovered stolen last Monday night from the premises of Kikuube Police Station, where the equipment had been parked.

The road equipment, which included a wheel loader and grader, was delivered to Kikuube district by the Ministry of Works as part of a concerted effort to improve the district’s road infrastructure.

Just last month, the government allocated road equipment worth 34.6 billion SHILLINGS to fourteen new districts, with a clear directive to utilize the machinery for its intended purpose.

The theft of the battery has sparked dismay among local leaders and raised questions about the security measures in place. Suzan Kabasindi, a district councillor for Buhimba town council, expressed disappointment over the incident, stressing the urgent need for road rehabilitation in the area.

Amlan Tumusiime, the Kikuube district Resident Commissioner, condemned the theft as a hindrance to efforts aimed at improving the district’s roads. He emphasized the vital role of well-maintained roads in facilitating access to markets and essential services for local communities. Tumusiime urged the police to expedite their investigation and recover the stolen battery.

Chris Nkalu, the Kikuube district speaker, echoed Tumusiime’s sentiments, emphasizing the detrimental impact of the theft on the district’s road rehabilitation plans.

In response to the incident, district authorities are considering purchasing a new battery to ensure the uninterrupted use of the machinery until the end of the fiscal year.

Julius Hakiiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson, confirmed that a case had been filed by the machinery’s driver, and investigations are currently underway. However, as of now, no suspects have been apprehended in connection with the theft.

In a bid to enhance road networks and connectivity across various districts in Uganda, the local governments of Bugweri, Kalaki, Kapelabyong, Kalenga, Kassanda, Kitagwenda, Kazo, Kwania, Kikuube, Madi-Okollo, Nabilatuk, Obongi, Rwampara, and Terego received new road equipment. This initiative aims to improve transportation infrastructure and facilitate easier access to essential services for residents in these districts.

The ceremony, which took place on May 20th, 2024, was officiated by Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Nabbanja.
