Hoima Regional Referral Hospital in Uganda is grappling with a severe shortage of blood, specifically in the O blood group and the negative rhesus factor. The head of the field team in Hoima city and district, Henry Benda, has highlighted the urgency of the situation, revealing that the hospital recently lost two mothers due to the lack of blood.

To address this pressing issue, the Uganda Blood Transfusion Services in Hoima has launched a campaign to collect a minimum of 500 units of blood within the current week. Benda emphasizes the shortage in blood group O and the negative rhesus factor, urging the community to come forward and contribute to replenish the depleted stock at the referral hospital.

To kickstart the initiative, a blood donation exercise was organized on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at Wright Road. The collaboration between the Uganda Blood Transfusion Services and city mayor Brian Kaboyo aimed to collect at least 100 blood units from willing donors.

As the campaign gains momentum, the focus will continue on Thursday, January 4, 2024, with a blood donation exercise scheduled at the youth conference organized by Hoima Catholic Diocese in Mugalike, Kagadi district. This collective effort seeks to address the immediate blood shortage crisis at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital and save lives that depend on timely and sufficient blood supplies.
