A dramatic and deadly incident unfolded when a woman took the life of her husband, only to be killed herself by an enraged mob in Rushambya village, Kashozi Sub-County, Ibanda District. The disturbing events occurred on Tuesday at approximately 2:00 PM, involving 35-year-old Amos Gumikiriza Ntagyenda and 34-year-old Justine Kyotungire.
The couple’s story began with what appeared to be a romantic partnership but ended in tragedy. Justine Kyotungire had returned from working abroad five months earlier, only to discover that her husband, Amos, had married another woman using the money she had sent home. This revelation sparked deep conflict between the couple, which seemingly escalated to violence.
Local Council Chairperson Elias Musinguzi reported that the couple had been struggling with marital issues since Kyotungire’s return. “Justine had been away for two years, working abroad,” Musinguzi said. “Upon her return, she found Amos had married another woman. This caused significant unhappiness and a severe shift in their relationship.”
The couple had three children together, and Kyotungire was pregnant at the time of the incident. The situation came to a head when Kyotungire, overcome with anger and frustration, attacked her husband. According to neighbor Fred Barahukayo, Kyotungire found her husband resting at the home of his new wife. “She sneaked in and cut him in the neck with a knife,” Barahukayo recounted. “After killing him, she began wandering the village, shouting about her actions.”
The commotion attracted the attention of local residents, who, in a state of outrage, pursued Kyotungire. Barahukayo added that she attempted to flee by jumping into a nearby dam but was intercepted by the mob. The mob then killed her before she could escape or carry out her plan.
Ibanda Resident District Commissioner Caleb Tukaikiriza confirmed the events and provided insight into Kyotungire’s possible motives. “We are collaborating with the police on this case,” Tukaikiriza stated. “From what we know, Justine had sought permission to work abroad with the promise of sending money to buy land. Instead, she returned to find her husband with a new wife.”
