The Engineering department of Kitgum Municipal Council has started repairing nonfunctional solar-powered street lights. This decision was made after an assessment conducted by the department revealed that 25 streetlights were either damaged or not working.
Due to limited funds, Kitgum municipal town clerk Ayuub Kisuubi Alikwan confirmed that they have allocated 15 million shillings from the Uganda Road Fund to repair only 10 of these streetlights. The remaining 15 will be addressed gradually in the upcoming financial years.
Ayuub emphasized the importance of the community’s vigilance in preserving these repaired solar light units, as the repair costs are a significant challenge.
Kitgum municipal mayor Richard Ojara Okwera highlighted the security concerns associated with the nonfunctional solar street lights. He explained that these nonworking lights have provided a safe haven for criminal gangs to target and harm locals at night, stealing their money, belongings, and other valuables.
