Lira City West Division MP Vincent Shedrick Obong has won praise from voters after spending his own salary to personally fix and maintain bad roads in Kakoge-Omodo, Ober, Obutuwelo, Omito, Amuca wards and the starch factory. As a result, many voters want him re-elected to Parliament unopposed in the upcoming 2026 election.

There is a general sense of relief across Lira City. Voters shared their views on how the approaching 2026 election is shaping up in the Lira City West Division. Speaking to a reporter on Thursday afternoon, a 50-year-old woman named Silvia Adong from Omodo market said the improved road conditions are motivating voters to support Obong’s return to Parliament in 2026.

Okello R, a boda-boda rider, told The Ankole Times that his business has improved thanks to the better roads. He wants no disruptions to Obong’s work during the 2026 campaign and would like to see him re-elected unopposed. A market vendor in Ojwina ward echoed this sentiment, saying Obong Eyit deserves another term in Parliament come 2026.

A 79-year-old man from Anai ward, Lira City Division, who spoke on condition of anonymity, praised MP Obong for making travel easier for mothers who need to reach the Ober Health Centre IV for antenatal care.

In an exclusive interview with MP Vincent Shedrick Obong Eyit of Lira City West Division on Thursday afternoon, he explained that by using his own salary to maintain and repair bad roads in his constituency, he has been reminded of his need to serve the people of Lango and the importance of prayer.

On Thursday afternoon, many people traveling on foot from the Ober Health Centre IV to the city center were observed in a positive mood, with many thanking the dedicated MP Obong Eyit. A 47-year-old woman thanked Obong Eyit for his help during a difficult time when she needed to get to the health center to deliver her baby.

In Kakoge A, the LC One chairman, Delkano Oboke, expressed his joy about the repaired roads in the area, which were fixed by Vincent Obong using his own salary. MP Obong repaired poor roads from Kakoge to Omodo market area, via Orlando to the far end of Lira City, and other key access roads in Lira City West Division.

MP Obong acknowledges that road construction or maintenance is not typically an MP’s responsibility. However, he was dismayed to find that the 1 billion shillings allocated to Lira City was not properly utilized. He suspects the funds were misused or embezzled by certain authorities within Lira City.

Recently, MP Eyit called upon the State House Anti-Corruption Unit to investigate the 1 billion shillings road fund disbursed to Lira City, as it appears it was not used for its intended purpose.

Earlier, while addressing residents, Hon. Vincent Obong Eyit Shedrick acknowledged receiving numerous complaints about the poor condition of roads in Lira City West. He decided to use his personal salary to address the issue by hiring a grader.

Hon. James Omara Elem, Lira City’s Secretary for Finance, responded to our inquiry, stating, “We do not fear any investigation because we are confident our hands are clean. My official comment is, he can bring whoever he wants to investigate us. He (MP Obong Eyit) is a member of the road committee and is therefore criticizing the committee to which he belongs.”

When contacted for comment, Hon. Jimmy Michael Akena Obote, Chairperson of the Road Committee for Lira City and also serving as the Lira City East Division MP, did not respond to repeated phone calls by press time.

Work has also commenced on a 2-kilometer murram road linking Bung ‘B’ cell and Atodi in Omito ward, ending near the health center after MP Obong flagged it off last week.

On July 3rd, 2024, MP Obong launched a 3.7 km road passing through Saving Grace Nursery and Primary School in Amuca ward via Amin-nyaa cell to Lela village.
