A deadly road accident in Rakai District has resulted in the loss of at least 10 lives and left 20 others severely injured as they were en route to a burial site in neighboring Isingiro District. The incident occurred on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, when a fuso truck carrying over 35 residents from the villages of Ssanje and Kigolomolo in Kyarurangira Sub County, Rakai District, overturned at Lwabaganda Cell, Dyango Town Council, bordering Isingiro District.
Eyewitnesses, including Mr. Paul Nuwamanya, reported that the vehicle was traveling at excessive speed before the driver lost control, resulting in the truck overturning multiple times, causing instant fatalities. Mr. Kaggwa Ssekamwa, the Rakai District Chairperson and one of the first responders, stated that among the survivors, 20 sustained serious injuries and have been transported to various health centers for urgent medical attention.
Rakai District Police Commander, Mr. Justus Tashobya, confirmed the tragic incident, mentioning that the driver of the truck fled the scene immediately following the crash. Expressing condolences, he highlighted the unfortunate timing of the accident as it coincided with the Easter holidays, a time traditionally marked by celebrations.
Mr. Tashobya emphasized the importance of responsible driving, urging motorists to exercise caution on the roads, particularly during festive periods. He acknowledged the challenges posed by road conditions but stressed the need for drivers to prioritize safety to prevent further tragedies.
This devastating crash adds to a series of recent road accidents in Uganda, including a similar incident involving a truck carrying students that resulted in fatalities and injuries. The lack of adequate road infrastructure in Rakai District, despite longstanding promises for improvement, exacerbates the risks faced by commuters and underscores the urgent need for government action to ensure safer travel conditions for all road users.
