The government of Uganda has allocated an additional 200 million shillings to Obongi district for the Emyooga program, recognizing the district’s improved performance. This announcement was made by Ronald Waiswa, the Regional Manager of the Microfinance Support Center Ltd in Arua, during a meeting with Obongi’s Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka and Assistant RDC Umuhoza Habiba Furaha at the President’s office in Obongi district.
Mr. Waiswa reported that 80 million shillings have already been distributed to four Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs) in Obongi. He assured that the remaining 120 million shillings, earmarked for six SACCOs, is currently being processed. He explained that the additional funding was granted due to the district’s improved Emyooga performance, largely attributed to the efforts of the Obongi RDC’s office. This improvement includes auditing 85% of SACCOs, holding Annual General Meetings (AGMs) for 75% of them, and better recovery rates of borrowed funds.
Waiswa commended RDC Mpimbaza Hashaka for his commitment to enhancing service delivery under the Emyooga program, which has positioned Obongi as one of the top-performing districts in the West Nile region.
In response, RDC Mpimbaza Hashaka expressed gratitude to the government for recognizing his efforts. He pledged to continue promoting government programs in Obongi district and urged Emyooga beneficiaries to avoid misappropriating the funds. He also announced that starting next week, the RDC’s office would begin recovering funds from borrowers to ensure others can benefit as well.
Obongi district initially received 560 million shillings in the first phase of Emyooga disbursements. Since becoming a district on July 1, 2019, Obongi has made significant strides in development. When Obongi county achieved district status, Palorinya was a parish under Itula sub-county. It later became a sub-county with a modest beginning in a rented office. With government support, including approximately 10 billion shillings for infrastructure development under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) program, Obongi district invested in Palorinya and Itula sub-counties.
As a result, Palorinya sub-county has seen considerable development, including the construction of a permanent office building, which was inaugurated this week by the Minister of State for Urban Development, Hon. Obina Kania. The event was attended by Obongi MPs, the RDC, the district chairperson, other leaders, and community members.
The district leadership expressed their gratitude to the NRM government for this significant achievement.
