In Kisoro District, there is a growing issue of open defecation among residents due to the insufficient availability of toilet facilities. Many people are now resorting to open spaces such as corridors, sanitary lanes, and bushes to relieve themselves. This practice poses a significant public health concern for the district. A recent survey conducted by our reporter reveals that a considerable number of locals engage in open defecation, leading to the contamination of important water sources like springs, shallow wells, and rivers, which are crucial for the community’s well-being.
Local residents, including Alex Habyarimana from Gasiza ward in Kisoro Municipality, Benon Maniraguha from Bunagana town council, and Eliab Ndagizimana from Rutare parish, Chahi Sub County, Kisoro District, have reported witnessing both men and women openly defecating in corridors and nearby bushes.
Kisoro’s Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Robert Tukamuhebwa, acknowledges the shortage of toilets and the widespread practice of open defecation. Tukamuhebwa attributes this challenge to poverty and calls for collaborative efforts to eliminate open defecation.
