A 24 year old man from Omolo ‘A’ Village in Opelere Parish, Loro Sub County, Oyam District, was found dead after being convicted by a village court for the theft of a goat from his neighbor. Aaron Opio, the young man in question, was accused of stealing the goat and subsequently slaughtered it. He appeared before the village court, where he admitted his guilt and agreed to pay a compensation of 250,000 shillings to the rightful owner.

However, facing difficulty in raising the required compensation amount, Opio found himself confined to a house under the supervision of the Omolo trading center chairman. Despite this confinement, tragedy struck as Opio managed to escape during the night. Utilizing the very rope that had been used to restrain him, he took his own life by hanging himself.

The discovery of Opio’s lifeless body dangling from a tree was made by farmers on their way to their gardens the following day. Mr. Nickson Okwir, the Local Council (LCI) chairman of Omolo ‘A’ Village, described Opio as a “lazy person” who prioritized alcohol consumption over work.

Upon receiving reports of the incident, detectives from the Adakoberiot police post visited the scene to gather information and record statements from witnesses. After completing their preliminary investigation, the authorities handed over Opio’s body to his relatives for burial.
