Obongi, Uganda – Security forces in Obongi district have successfully apprehended Deng Aga, also known as ‘Chol Agwek Chol,’ a South Sudanese refugee and notorious criminal. Deng, a member of the Dinka tribe, was arrested following a joint operation conducted by security forces after he had been on the run for several days.
Deng Aga grabbed a gun from a female police officer during a food distribution event in Luru village, Morobi Parish, Itula sub-county on Saturday. He subsequently used the stolen weapon to shoot and kill a fellow refugee in the Itipa refugee settlement area. Deng, who had a domestic dispute with his wife, also intended to kill her and the local council chairperson.
The joint operation to capture Deng was led by Brigade Commander Col. Koch, Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, his assistant Umuhoza Habiba Furaha, District Police Commander SP Nkurunziza Graciano, and Ewafa Detach Commander Lt. Sebbi Olega.
RDC Hashaka commended the security forces and the Obongi district security committee for their effective work in capturing Deng. He urged both refugees and Ugandans to remain vigilant and report any individuals causing insecurity to ensure swift action can be taken.
Hashaka also called on the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) to thoroughly profile all refugees and isolate those with criminal backgrounds. He highlighted that Deng had changed his name upon arriving in Uganda to evade recognition as a criminal. Deng had previously escaped from prison in South Sudan.
