A devastating accident occurred on Saturday afternoon in Rukungiri district, when a FUSO truck collided with a house, resulting in the loss of three lives.
The incident occurred around 2 PM at Kakirago village in Bugangari Sub County along the Rukungiri – Kihihi-Kanungu road. The truck, bearing registration number UBC 786B, was transporting cement and iron sheets from Rukungiri town to Kihihi in Kanungu district when it experienced a mechanical failure and veered off the road.
Tragically, as the truck swerved, it struck two children walking along the pavement. The victims were identified as Darius Ahimbisibwe, 5 years old, son of Reuben Turyaikayo from Nyakinengo, and Sarah Ainembabazi, 8 years old, daughter of Bernard Mugisha from Kakirago village in Bugangari sub-county. The children were returning home after attending prayers at a nearby church.
The momentum of the collision caused the truck to overturn and crash into a nearby house, resulting in the death of Kyoti Karwemera, the 60-year-old owner of the house.
Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for Kigezi region, confirmed the tragic accident. The bodies of the deceased have been transported to Rwakabengo Health Centre II mortuary for postmortem examinations.
Maate also stated that the wreckage of the vehicle has been moved to Rukungiri police station, and efforts are underway to locate and apprehend the driver responsible. The case has been filed at Rukungiri police station under file number TAR 24/2024.
