Kabale Municipal Council received a report from Mr. Peter Nkurunungi, the managing director of Geses U Ltd, on April 5, 2024. The report detailed the installation of solar-powered street lights in the town. However, it also highlighted a troubling issue: vandalism.

The contractor, Geses U Ltd, faced difficulties during the project due to vandalism. Mr. Nkurunungi revealed that 17 solar-powered streetlights, valued at Shs68 million, were damaged by unknown individuals before the official handover. This act of vandalism poses a significant threat to the newly installed infrastructure.

Despite the challenges, Kabale town now enjoys the glow of a Shs1.99 billion solar streetlight project. However, the occurrence of vandalism has emerged as a major concern for the town’s residents and officials alike.

In response to this threat, Mr. Godfrey Nyakahuma, the Kabale Resident District Commissioner, issued directives to security forces. He emphasized the importance of neutralizing criminals involved in vandalizing government infrastructure. This stern action aims to prevent future incidents of vandalism and safeguard public property.

During the commissioning ceremony for the 200 solar-powered streetlights, Mr. Nyakahuma addressed the issue raised by local leaders regarding vandalism. He stressed the crucial role of streetlights in enhancing security and public safety in Kabale town.

Echoing Mr. Nyakahuma’s directives, Mr. Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesman, reaffirmed the police’s commitment to combat vandalism. He emphasized that the police are prepared to use necessary force against anyone caught vandalizing streetlights or road furniture, considering it a threat to security.

Mr. Maate revealed that some suspected vandals were already prosecuted and are currently on remand. This action signifies the seriousness with which the authorities are tackling the issue of vandalism.

Mr. Byamugisha Sentaro, the Kabale Municipality Mayor, and Ms. Justine Barekye, the Town Clerk, expressed concerns about how vandalism undermines the goals of the streetlight project. These goals include beautifying the town and facilitating night-time business activities.

Despite the setbacks, Mr. Sentaro assured the public that a thorough pre-commissioning inspection confirmed the functionality of all installed lights. He urged vigilance among the citizens and called upon security forces to step up efforts in protecting the infrastructure, considering the significant investment made by the government.
