Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) has teamed up with Ker Kwaro Acholi to raise awareness about the importance of registering traditional marriages. The goal of this partnership is to grant traditional marriages the same legal recognition as church and civil marriages.
This collaboration was announced during a meeting held at Rose Berry Hotel in Gulu city on Tuesday.
Vincent Katutsi, the URSB director of civil registration, emphasized that this initiative aims to encourage more couples in the Acholi region to value and participate in traditional marriage registration. He urged couples to register their traditional marriages to ensure the effective application of marriage laws in the country.
Okello Okuna, the Prime Minister of Ker Kwaro Acholi, commended URSB for the partnership, highlighting that the registration of traditional marriages establishes clear boundaries for legitimate relationships between spouses and safeguards their property rights in the event of divorce.
