Relief aid has finally reached hundreds of residents affected by the recent devastating landslides in Bukwo District, Sebei Sub-region. The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) on Tuesday delivered 28 tonnes of food and non-food items to the affected families.

Bukwo Resident District Commissioner (RDC) George Owanyi supervised the offloading and distribution of the items, which included maize flour, beans, blankets, jerrycans, and other essentials meant to support survivors who lost homes and property in the disaster.

The most affected areas are Tulel and Chesower sub-counties, which were hit by heavy rains last week, triggering massive mudslides that swept through several villages. According to local authorities, at least 25 people have lost their lives, and 13 bodies have so far been recovered.

Search and rescue operations are still ongoing, led by the UPDF and local residents. However, progress remains slow due to the steep terrain and inaccessibility of the affected sites. No heavy machinery can reach the area, forcing rescuers to rely on basic tools such as hoes and spades.

The landslides, described as the worst in Bukwo’s recent history, were caused by continuous rainfall that loosened the already fragile mountain slopes. Many homes were buried, crops destroyed, and several families displaced.

Authorities have urged residents living along risky slopes to relocate to safer ground as the rains continue in the region. Relief agencies are also assessing the long-term needs of the displaced families as government plans further assistance.
