Libino Byamukama, Rukiga – Locals and leaders from Rukiga District have called upon the government to intervene in the state of roads and power outages in the area.

They revealed this yesterday, 8th June, during Women’s Day celebrations at Nyakihanga Playground in Kashekye Parish, Kamwezi Sub-county, Rukiga District. The Rukiga Women’s Day celebration was held under the theme, “INVEST IN WOMEN: ACCELERATE PROGRESS.”

Addressing the locals, Teddyson Niwagaba, the Kamwezi Sub-county LC3 Chairman, used the opportunity to raise an alarm about the state of roads in the sub-county.

He added that it’s unfortunate that Kashekye Parish, with a large population and health facilities, has no electricity.

He also highlighted some of the achievements made by the Rukiga District Women MP in the sub-county.

Joselin Arineitwe, the Chairperson of the Rukiga Women’s Council, commended the government for empowering women in the district through various programs such as UWEP, Emyooga, and PDM among others.

She, however, warned women against undermining their husbands, calling on them to use the empowerment programs to develop their families.

The Rukiga District LC5 Chairperson, Mbabazi Robert Kakwerere, said that Rukiga, being a mountainous area, needs special attention.

He added that Rukiga has only Bukinda Sub-county which has no Health Center III unit, yet it is a policy of the government to have a Health Center III in every sub-county.

The Rukiga County MP, Roland Bish Ndyomugyenyi, said that he intervened in the situation at Kamwezi Health Center IV where female and male patients were sharing toilets.

The Rukiga District Woman MP, Kamusiime Caroline Muhwezi, who was also the chief mobilizer for Rukiga District Women’s Day celebrations, decried the state of Rutobo-Kamwezi Road and Muhanga-Kisizi Road, which the President pledged to tarmac.

The chief guest, Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth, the State Minister for Defense and Veteran Affairs, who was accompanied by fellow ministers Aisha Sekindi (State Minister for Water and Environment) and David Muhoozi (State Minister for Internal Affairs), pledged to follow up on the issue.
