Rev. Can. Duncans Mugumya, the Commissioner of Physical Education and Sports (PES), has issued a call to parents, urging them to encourage their school-going children to actively participate in sports. Speaking at the 12th edition of the Rev. Mugumya football competition finals at Kyeibanga grounds in Sheema district, Mugumya emphasized the importance of allowing children to explore and develop their God-given talents through sports.
Taking a stand on the government’s policy promoting sports and physical education in schools, Mugumya challenged the misconception among some parents who view sports as a hindrance to academic progress. He emphasized that children should not be deprived of the opportunity to engage in sports, highlighting the government’s directive supporting their involvement in physical activities.
In addition to promoting sports, Mugumya addressed the youth, particularly school-going children, urging them to resist temptations that could divert them from realizing their talents and staying focused. He specifically cautioned against engaging in detrimental activities such as drugs, alcohol, and fornication, emphasizing the potential dangers these behaviors pose.
The Rev. Mugumya football competition, an event supported by Mugumya himself, features teams of women, boys, and old and former men stars in football. The annual competition, held on the first day of the year, marked its 12th edition at Kyeibanga grounds. Notably, the Kyeibanga Old Persons men’s team, led by Mugumya, lost 3-2 on penalties to Kashekuro, securing the title. The women’s title went to Kyeibanga, defeating Kashekuro 1-0, while the Kyeibanga boys’ team clinched the title with a 1-0 victory over Kashekuro.
Winning teams were rewarded with cash prizes, medals, and trophies, and all participating teams received uniforms and balls. This year’s edition also featured a health camp, attracting a large number of attendees for screenings, ailment testing, and free treatment. The initiative demonstrated the broader impact of sports events, extending beyond the field to promote community well-being.
