Ugandan and South African military leaders discussed security diplomacy and a decade-long friendship during a formal dinner.

(Kampala) -Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Commander of the Land Forces, hosted Gen. Rudzani Maphwanya, Chief of South Africa’s National Defence Force, to a dinner at Serena Kigo, celebrating over a decade of camaraderie and military cooperation between the two nations.

Gen. Maphwanya emphasized the importance of security diplomacy as the cornerstone for fostering political and business diplomacy. He stated that without stable security foundations, other forms of diplomacy would struggle to thrive.

The dinner showcased Uganda’s rich culture through performances by the Ndere Troupe and the Janzi Band. Guests also enjoyed traditional Ugandan cuisine, which Gen. Maphwanya described as a warm gesture of African hospitality.

Gen. Kainerugaba reflected on his long-standing relationship with Gen. Maphwanya, which began in 2010, facilitated by Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala. He highlighted Gen. Maphwanya’s instrumental role in strengthening the ties between the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).

During his speech, Gen. Maphwanya expressed gratitude to President Yoweri Museveni for the kindness and mentorship he and his delegation have received during previous visits to Uganda. He praised President Museveni’s leadership, likening his support to that of a parent guiding his children.

The evening dinner followed a meeting earlier in the day at the Special Forces Command headquarters, where the two military chiefs held discussions on enhancing bilateral cooperation. Senior officials from the UPDF, Uganda Police, and Prisons also attended the dinner, with Gen. Maphwanya acknowledging their crucial roles in maintaining national security.
