The Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, in a gesture of reconciliation and acknowledgment, has disbursed a total of sh5.1 billion as peace dividends to former soldiers of the West Nile Bank Front (WNBF) in the West Nile region.
The West Nile Bank Front emerged as a rebel faction in the 1990s under the leadership of prominent figures, notably Juma Oris. Engaged in armed conflict against the Ugandan government, the rebel group ultimately faced defeat and surrendered in the early 2000s.
During the official launch of the resettlement package distribution at Koboko Boma grounds in Koboko district on Wednesday, May 8, Brigadier General (Rtd) Emmanuel Musinguzi, the Director of Veteran Affairs in the Ministry of Defence, announced that a total of 4,901 ex-combatants have been verified to receive the allocated funds.
According to Brig. Gen. Musinguzi, the disbursement structure entails a minimum payment of sh700,000 for the lowest-ranked ex-combatant, while the highest-ranking individual will receive sh3 million.
Minister of State for Defence in charge of Veteran Affairs, Huda Oleru Abason, lauded the government’s initiative, describing it as a significant relief for the beneficiaries. She further outlined plans within her ministry to extend financial support to former members of the defunct Uganda National Rescue Front, previously led by Gen. Moses Alli.
Addressing the gathering, Minister of State for the Northern Region, Kenneth Omona, highlighted the timing of the disbursement, coinciding with the government’s efforts to alleviate household poverty. He encouraged the beneficiaries to leverage government programs aimed at combating poverty.
Expressing gratitude, Koboko District Chairman Ashiraf Mambo commended the government for heeding the call of the West Nile community and addressing their concerns.
Representing Gen. Salim Saleh, Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Oboth Oboth reiterated the government’s steadfast commitment to ensuring peace and stability across the nation.
Hajat Maimuna, a prominent figure within the West Nile Bank Front, echoed the sentiment of appreciation, acknowledging the government for fulfilling its promise to the ex-combatants.
