In a recent peace meeting held at Kaithin Village in Loputuk Sub County, Matheniko County, Moroto District, Major General Don Nabasa, the Commander of the 3 Infantry Division, called on the elders and women of Karamoja to encourage the Karachunas to embrace peace and renounce criminal activities.

Major General Nabasa urged those still living in the wilderness to surrender their firearms voluntarily and assured them of potential benefits from government programs. He emphasized the importance of alternative livelihoods for former Karachunas who had previously handed over their weapons to security forces.

Furthermore, Major General Nabasa urged the people of Karamoja to unite and avoid discrimination based on ethnicity. He promised to facilitate inter-clan meetings to resolve conflicts between conflicting parties.

Highlighting the region’s abundant natural resources, Major General Nabasa stressed that peace and security are essential for harnessing these resources and encouraged the people of Karamoja to rely less on relief assistance and focus on self-sufficiency.

Brigadier General Felix Busizoori, the Deputy Commander of the 3 Infantry Division, called on the local community to cooperate with security forces by providing timely information about criminals. He emphasized that such cooperation would help isolate criminals, ensuring the safety of lives and livestock.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Francis Chemusto, the Regional Police Commander Mount Moroto, advised the community to preserve crime scenes, as police dogs are highly effective in tracking criminals. This advice followed the successful recovery of 25 stolen goats in Katanga, which were later returned to their rightful owner.

The peace meeting was attended by senior officers from the Joint Security Forces, local leaders, Karachunas, and members of the community.
