Police Arrest 15 Suspects in Nabweru Machete Attack

The Ankole Times

Up to 15 suspected machete attackers have been arrested following a violent attack that left several people injured in Nabweru. The operation was conducted by the Directorate of Crime Intelligence (DCI) in collaboration with teams from Nabweru and Kawempe police stations.

The attacks occurred three days ago, targeting multiple homes in Nabweru. Denis Bbosa, one of the victims, recounted how a group of seven to ten men armed with machetes and other weapons raided his home. They attacked three people, stole valuables, and proceeded to Lillian Nakigudde’s home where similar atrocities were committed. The gang then targeted Golooba Sabiiti’s household, injuring him and his wife while looting their belongings.

“They took all the items they could carry and left us for dead. It was the worst experience, and we had taken long without experiencing such gruesome crimes in this area,” Golooba lamented.

Fortunately, Bbosa’s home was equipped with CCTV cameras which captured the attacks. According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, this footage was instrumental in the arrest of the 15 suspects. The police are now awaiting identification from the victims to proceed with the legal process.

While there are speculations linking the attackers to individuals evicted from Lubigi, Owoyesigyire emphasized that investigations are ongoing to establish concrete links.

He noted that such coordinated attacks had not been prevalent in recent times, citing previous incidents in areas like Nansana, Namungona, Ssentema, Bulenga, and Nsangi where similar machete attacks occurred last year.

Several victims of the machete attacks are currently receiving treatment at Kawempe and Mulago hospitals.
