Police in Mukono district have announced a change in the venue for the National Unity Platform (NUP) rally, scheduled for Wednesday, May 29, 2024. This decision follows the clearance granted to NUP to resume their activities.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Police spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan, disclosed that the rally’s location has been shifted from Njogeza playground to Ntawo playground. This change came after a meeting held by the district security council.
Owoyesigyire stated, “The Kampala Metropolitan East Territorial Police and Mukono Police Station wish to inform the public that, following a resolution by the district security committee of Mukono, the venue for the NUP rally scheduled for tomorrow, 29th May 2024 in Mukono has been changed.”
He further noted that the NUP leadership had been duly notified about these alterations.
In a gesture of acknowledgment, Owoyesigyire expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and extended appreciation for the public’s understanding. He also expressed anticipation for a collaborative effort with the NUP team to ensure a seamless and successful rally.
The rally announcement follows a meeting held on Monday, May 27, 2024, between the Police and NUP leadership. The meeting, led by the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, and NUP Secretary-General, Lewis Rubongoya, took place at the Police headquarters in Kampala.
This meeting ensued subsequent to a letter written by NUP on May 23, 2024, in protest against alleged brutality by the Police and military on May 22, 2024, and the reported obstruction of their activities.
Deputy Police spokesperson Clare Nabbaka, in a statement issued on Monday, outlined the outcomes of the meeting. It was agreed that NUP Leadership should officially notify the Inspector General of Police (IGP) early enough, in accordance with the law, to allow for timely responses from Police management. Copies of these notifications would be sent to the territorial commanders.
Furthermore, it was decided that the district security committee would assess the security at the venue, its environs, and the route intended to be used by NUP members before the meetings. Collaborating with the liaison officer of NUP, the committee would determine an appropriate venue where the Police could effectively provide security. This assessment would be coordinated with town clerks, who are responsible for granting permission for venue usage.
