(Singo) – Senior commanders of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) have gathered for a four-day workshop at the International Peace Support Operations Training Centre (IPSO-TC) to discuss ways to strengthen their role in the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). The workshop, titled “Lessons Learned,” is focused on sharing experiences, identifying challenges, and refining future strategies to support stability in Somalia and the region.
Deputy Commander of the Land Force, Major General Francis Takirwa, opened the session by emphasizing the importance of assessing the UPDF’s mission progress. “It is a privilege to examine what we’ve done, where we have succeeded, and where we can improve,” he said, stressing that continuous evaluation is essential for building effective peace and security in Somalia.
Maj Gen Takirwa also highlighted a key development in UPDF’s approach to training, noting that what was once a process led entirely by external partners is now increasingly managed by UPDF leaders. This transition, he explained, marks a significant step forward in the UPDF’s capacity to lead its operations independently.
Brigadier General John Patrick Otongo, Commandant of IPSO-TC, reinforced the center’s dedication to regional peace, stating that the training center aims to build strong, well-prepared personnel who can advance security in Somalia and neighboring areas.
The workshop includes a diverse group of senior UPDF figures and training partners, with participants such as Major General David Isimbwa, Deputy Commander of the UPDF Air Force; Major General Don Nabasa, 3 Infantry Division Commander; Brigadier General Felix Busizori, Commander of the 4 Infantry Division; Brigadier General Flavia Byekwaso, Chief of Staff of URDC; and Brigadier General Joseph Semwanga.
