Colonel Topher Magino, the Commander of Battle Group 40 of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces troops stationed under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia, has urged the warring clans of Jiddo and Garre in Quoryole district to cease hostilities and embrace reconciliation.
During a meeting with clan leaders and the Governor of Lower Shabelle, Mr. Mohamed Ibrahim Barre, in Quoryole town, Col Magino emphasized the importance of finding peaceful resolutions to conflicts. He urged the clans to prioritize peace and harmony above all else, regardless of the reasons behind the ongoing conflict.
Col Magino also assured the district local authority of his troops’ support in restoring normalcy to the sub-region. His pledge reflects the commitment of the military contingent to contribute to stability and peace-building efforts in the area.
Echoing Col Magino’s sentiments, Governor Mohamed Ibrahim emphasized the necessity of dialogue and thorough investigations to identify the root causes of the conflict. He expressed concern over the adverse impact of the clashes on the local population and stressed the importance of preventing such incidents from recurring in the future.
The district of Quoryole, located approximately 100 kilometers west of Mogadishu city, has been grappling with violent clan conflicts between the Gido and Garre clans for the past two months. These clashes have tragically resulted in the loss of over ten lives, highlighting the urgent need for resolution and reconciliation.
Clan conflicts are unfortunately all too common in Somalia, often hindering the country’s progress towards peace and stability. Addressing these inter-communal tensions is essential for fostering long-term peace and prosperity in the region.
