(Bombo) – The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has dispatched a team of 27 athletes to represent Uganda at the 2nd Africa Military Games in Abuja, Nigeria. The team, flagged off at a ceremony held at the Land Force Headquarters in Bombo, will compete in various sports as part of a regional effort to foster unity and athletic excellence among African military forces.
Major General Dr. Joseph Lucky Kidega, speaking at the ceremony, expressed gratitude to the Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for his support in securing Uganda’s participation in the Games. Emphasizing the importance of this event for both national pride and international camaraderie, Maj Gen Kidega encouraged the team to aim for victory. “Go well and come back with gold,” he told the athletes, urging them to give their best effort.
The head of the UPDF delegation, Brigadier General Richard Karemire, noted that the team’s mission extends beyond competition, saying, “The team will not only be competing to win but will also embody the African brotherhood that unites us.” Brig Gen Karemire highlighted the dual role of the athletes as competitors and representatives of Uganda’s values, character, and dedication.
The African Military Games were first held in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2002, where UPDF athletes earned silver and bronze medals. This year’s Games, held in Abuja, represent a renewed opportunity for the UPDF to showcase its sporting talents on the international stage.
Attendees at the flag-off event included senior military officers, such as Brigadier General Mwanje Ssekiranda, Chief of Staff of the Reserve Force, and Brigadier General Hassan Kimbowa, Adjutant at Land Force Headquarters.
