Major General Don William Nabasa, the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces 3 Division Commander, has called upon the Jie and Dodoth communities in Kotido and Kaabong districts of North Karamoja to consider forming a peaceful alliance. This alliance aims to address cattle theft and reduce tension between the two groups.
Speaking at an inter-district security community meeting held in Moruitit village, Sidok Sub-County, Kaabong district, Maj Gen Nabasa emphasized the importance of fostering brotherhood and reducing counter-accusations to enhance peace. He highlighted the need for collaboration to combat cattle theft effectively.
Despite ongoing accusations and counter-accusations between the Jie and Dodoth communities, Maj Gen Nabasa noted relative peace in the sub-region. He acknowledged the existing Presidential Amnesty window and urged both communities to work together to maintain peace.
Addressing concerns about the Turkana pastoralists, Maj Gen Nabasa assured that measures are being taken to address this issue along the Uganda-Kenya border. He urged local leaders to cooperate with the UPDF’s 405 Brigade Commander and tasked Battalion Commanders to identify reformed warriors who can assist security forces.
Highlighting the value of reformed warriors, Maj Gen Nabasa emphasized their knowledge of the terrain, routes, and hideouts, which can aid in curbing criminal activities in Northern Karamoja.
Captain (Rtd) Chris Mike Okirya, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Kaabong, called upon communities and rustlers still possessing firearms to surrender them peacefully to authorities. This action would make them eligible for government incentives and services.
District Chairpersons, Hon. Meri Jino (Kaabong) and Hon. Lotee Paul (Kotido), agreed to lead the drilling of boreholes along borderlines to address water scarcity and facilitate deployment along the Uganda-Kenya border. Ms. Judith Nakut, the Karacuna mobilizer, pledged to intensify efforts to encourage the voluntary surrender of illegal firearms.
The meeting saw the participation of various stakeholders, including Resident District Commissioners, LCV Chairpersons, senior security officers, LC 3 Chairpersons, District councillors, elders, and community members.
