Lwengo District, Uganda — A deadly road accident in the early hours of Saturday morning has claimed the lives of seven people along the Masaka–Mbarara highway in Lwengo District.

The crash occurred at around 4:30 a.m. at Njagalakasayi and involved two vehicles: a silver Fuso truck, registration number UBP 510V, and a silver Toyota Fielder, registration number UBH 476W.

Police preliminary investigations indicate that the Toyota Fielder, which was travelling from Masaka towards Mbarara, veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with the oncoming Fuso truck that was heading towards Masaka.

The impact of the collision killed all four occupants of the Toyota Fielder on the spot. The deceased included the male driver, an adult female passenger, and two juvenile passengers whose identities had not yet been established by press time. Three additional bodies were later retrieved from the wreckage, bringing the total number of fatalities to seven.

Traffic Police responded swiftly and secured the scene. Both vehicles were towed to the police station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV), while the bodies were taken to Masaka City Mortuary for postmortem examinations.

Police suspect reckless driving to be the cause of the accident, although investigations are still ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.

The incident was confirmed by SP Kasirye Twaha, the Public Relations Officer for the Greater Masaka Region, who appealed to motorists to observe traffic regulations and exercise extra caution, particularly during early morning hours.
