Prices of essential goods such as sugar, soap, and cooking oil have remained stable at the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) Trade Fair, contrary to the typical expectation of lower prices at such events. A survey conducted by New Vision revealed that prices for these items are comparable to regular retail prices.
Here is a summary of the prices observed at the trade fair:
Product | Trade Fair Price (UGX) | Regular Retail Price (UGX) |
---|---|---|
Sugar (per kilo) | 5,600 | Approximately the same |
Cooking Oil (per litre) | 8,000 | Slightly lower |
Toothpaste and Body Oils (bundled) | Higher than expected | Higher than expected |
Washing Soap (per kilo) | 5,500 | 6,000 (in wholesale shops) |
The price of washing soap has decreased by 500 UGX at the trade fair, with a one-kilogram bar now costing 5,500 UGX, compared to the usual wholesale price of 6,000 UGX. Some soap manufacturers who reduced prices by 1,000 UGX faced high demand, resulting in stock shortages by Saturday evening.
UMA’s executive director, Ezra Rubanda, attributed the trade fair prices to negotiation dynamics in production and the supply chain, stating that some manufacturers were unable to lower prices further. He also refuted claims that expensive stalls were driving up the cost of essential commodities, revealing that most stalls had received subsidies, with the lowest fee being 500,000 UGX for the entire exhibition.
Rubanda encouraged the public to utilize the trade fair to connect with suppliers and explore new technologies that could benefit their businesses after the event.
