Former KCCA FC Coach Morley Byekwaso Leads Uganda Cranes Temporarily

Thursday, October 5, 2023

In a recent announcement, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has chosen Morley Byekwaso, former KCCA FC Coach, as the interim head coach of the Uganda Cranes for a one-month period.

FUFA confirmed the decision on their website, mentioning that the interim technical team will serve from October 3rd to October 31st, 2023. The team includes Morley Byekwaso as Interim Head Coach, Fred Muhumuza as interim Assistant Coach, Stephen Billy Kiggundu as interim Goalkeeping Coach, and Felix Ayobo as Interim Fitness Coach.

During this period, the quartet will manage the Uganda Cranes as they play two international games against Mali on October 13th in Bamako and Zambia in Dubai, UAE on October 17th, 2023. The squad for these matches will also be announced by the interim technical team.

Morley Byekwaso is well-known for guiding the Under 20 National team, the Uganda Hippos, to the final of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in 2021, where they finished as runners-up.

This appointment comes after the recent dismissal of Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic as the head coach of the Uganda Cranes, following a disappointing Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign where Uganda finished third with seven points.

FUFA dissolved the entire technical bench of the Uganda Cranes, including the Head Coach, Assistant Coach, Goalkeeping Trainer, and Strength and Conditioning Coach.

These positions were open to both Ugandan and non-Ugandan applicants, with coaches who had prior experience encouraged to apply.

A few weeks ago, FUFA’s Communications Director Hussein revealed that there were a significant number of applicants, with the majority coming from outside Uganda. There were 245 applicants for the Head Coach position, 34 for the Assistant Head Coach position, 24 for the Strength and Conditioning role, and seven for the Goalkeeping Coach position.
