Uganda Cranes Eye First Victory in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers Against Somalia

Tuesday, November 21, 2023

The Uganda Cranes are gearing up for a crucial clash in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers as they face Somalia on Tuesday, with hopes of securing their first victory in the campaign.

The Cranes, led by coach Paul Joseph Put, suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Guinea in their opening match, conceding a late winner. Now, they are set to take on Somalia, who also tasted defeat in their opener against Algeria, and will be technically playing at home despite the match being hosted in Morocco.

In their previous encounter against the Syli Nationale, Uganda found themselves trailing within the first ten minutes. However, they displayed a commendable performance, earning them the tag of outright favorites against Somalia, who are navigating the group stages for the first time. Despite the setback, the Cranes have the opportunity to bounce back and make their mark in the World Cup qualifiers.

Ramzey Kawooya, who arrived late in Morocco and had limited training with the team, is vying for a debut appearance. His integration into the squad during more training sessions has bolstered his chances of making a significant contribution. Meanwhile, Bobosi Byaruhanga, who was substituted due to injury at halftime, appears fit and available for selection.

Belgian coach Paul Joseph Put is considering making changes to the lineup that faced Guinea. Players such as Denis Omedi, Luwagga Kizito, Umar Lutalo, and Allan Oyirwoth impressed in a behind-closed-doors victory against Moroccan club RS Berkane. Whether they did enough to secure a spot in the starting XI remains to be seen.

One player under scrutiny is goalkeeper Jamal Salim, who faced criticism for his positioning during the last match. The coach may opt for changes in goal, seeking to strengthen the defensive setup.

Looking at the historical head-to-head record between Uganda and Somalia, the Cranes have a perfect record, winning all six previous meetings. They have scored an impressive 21 goals while conceding only two. However, it’s important to note that these encounters were in friendly games, Cecafa, or CHAN tournaments, not at the level of World Cup or Afcon. This upcoming match marks the first-ever FIFA-recognized meeting between the two sides, adding an extra layer of anticipation.

The probable starting XI for Uganda Cranes includes Watenga in goal, supported by Bwomono, Kayondo, Bevis, and Lwaliwa in defense. The midfield is likely to feature Aucho as captain, supported by Kawooya, Mutyaba, and Mato. The attacking duo of Lutalo and Bayo is expected to lead the frontline.

As Uganda Cranes step onto the field against Somalia, they carry the weight of expectations and the opportunity to secure a crucial victory in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The match not only holds significance for the team’s campaign but also as the first recognized meeting between the two nations on the grand stage of international football.
